markers

I hadn't realized that markers can be so fun to sketch with. I guess I've used wrong kind of paper before.

100. post

Yesterday I was sketching while watching tv. I used fiber tip pen and watercolors for this old fellow. If anyone has good watercolor or aquarell tips and tricks, please let me know, my method is just guessing.

life drawing

I'm going to take some life drawing again this fall. This is from last year, charcoal on a A1 paper. I'm aiming for good flow, better understanding weight and masses, and squash and stretch.

Drawn to Life by Walt Stanchfield should be a good help along the way.

something from my sketchbook...

...and pieces of paper laying around my apartment.

That drunken fisherman was fun to watch, and to draw. Unfortunately I was a bit tipsy myself. You know, when you're not thinking about what you draw, you become a human-printer, drawing lines in your sketchbook without any planning.

I find myself drawing without thinking way too often, especially when I'm afraid of drawing. Sketching in public places is quite a lot harder than sketching in front of tv at home. When people see you drawing them they get uncomfortable, and sadly so do I at that point. And my drawings become a mess. Lines are just not flowing anymore. Drawing people from further away helps, listening to music helps a lot. It's funny that when you're wearing your headphones, you're in a different world, sort of unreachable. Then you can even draw the guy sitting in front of you in a metro.

I also get the fear of drawing when someone is watching behind my shoulder. I start drawing something that I already know. Or even only comfortable lines. This results in repeating myself. I really have to be alone (or at least feel alone) to get to the flow and learn and discover something new.

The first sketch of these result of a good drawing day, capturing the character with few strong lines. That drunken fishermans lines are all over the place. Finding the right ones by trial and error. Different approaches, both important I guess.

Elisa, Sauli ja Pauli Illustration

This illustration was one part of a Pay TV campaign for Finnish telecommunications company Elisa. The campaign was created by Taivas advertising agency. They asked us to make cartoon versions of these two characters called Sauli and Pauli. They have been part of Elisas advertising for years now. I really admire John K's work. So his cartoon characters were a huge inspiration for this illustration.

friday afternoon sketching

And the video is recording of drawing 30 sec poses non stop for 40 minutes. It's compressed to 2 minutes. I found out that I was a bit afraid when I knew that all the drawing will be recorded. I lost some confidence in the line. But I did learn something for next time: Less lines, bigger brush!

Happy New Year!

I made a promise to myself to draw a bit more this year. I drew these sketches while watching tv tonight. Fiber-tip pen, 2-3 drawings on a A4 sized paper.
